Research Summary

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer diagnosed in Malaysia. Standard of care for CRC patients is improving, but patient outcomes still remain poor. There is dire need to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology of the disease in the population and to determine the barriers preventing access to surgical and oncological care. Ongoing projects to explore these issues include:

  • Development of a comprehensive institutional database of all colorectal cancer patients with the objective of determining baseline epidemiological data of CRC in Klang valley. This will be the preliminary phase towards development of a national CRC database.
  • Development of a patient navigation tool to improve uptake of bowel screening amongst asymptomatic average risk individuals over the age of 60 years

Main Research Interest / Goals

  • To gain detailed and accurate data on the epidemiology and aetiology of CRC in the Malaysian population
  • Determine barriers preventing timely access to diagnostic tests and surgical care in CRC
